Among those at the service was Alfred Stuart, 92, who said he was pleased to see the fallen being remembered.

“I was soldier during World War Two,” he said. “I went to France, then Poland and Russia, and we fought for our freedom.

“It is rewarding to see the younger generation coming here to remember the sacrifice every year.”

The service was followed by a volley of rifle fire from soldiers of the 37 Signal Regiment and a two-minute silence.

Serviceman Edward Richmond added: “It’s a very important day because it shows that people respect the all the forces that suffered in the Second World War.

“I come every year and it’s great to see a lot more young people coming every year as well.”
