A Conservative MEP says Birmingham’s businesses are being boosted by the UK’s membership of the European Union.

Anthea McIntyre made her comments at question time event at the ICC last week.

She said the city’s trade had real benefits thanks to the country’s links to the continent:

“Birmingham has the highest level of entrepreneurs outside London”[tweet this]

“Birmingham has the highest level of entrepreneurs outside London” – 16,000 start ups in 2013 and 3,800 inventions coming out of the city over the last three years.

“Birmingham is great at inventing things. In order to sustain this productivity we should market our work to Europe.”

Others on the panel also supported the city’s links to a wider trade network. Sharon Palmer, chief executive of Regional Action West Midlands, said:

“It’s not simply about what we get from Europe but what we can give to Europe. Immigrants are not only taking jobs and houses, they are also working and creating businesses in the West Midlands.

“If European funding moved away from Britain, the entire community of Birmingham will see help moved away.”
